What Is It?
This seminar explores a range of current topics in computing, including topics in research and practice.
- Freshmen and sophomores must enroll in CS 195 at least three times.
- Juniors and seniors must enroll in CS 295 at least three times.
Requirements
For each semester, attend at least four computing-related talks during the semester. Toward this end:
- Qualifying and mandatory talks.
- The Computer Science Department will host at least three or four talks each semester as part of this seminar. Some of these will be mandatory.
- Some other talks on campus may qualify as "computing related". (If you know of such a potential talk, you must contact the seminar coordinator at least a week in advance to get it approved.)
- Attendance will be taken at the talk by having you complete and sign a form for the talk. If you fail to do so, you will not be given credit for attending the talk.
Policy on End-of-Semester Deficiencies
- If a student's only deficiency is being one colloquium short of the required number when the semester ends, he or she will receive a grade of "I" (Incomplete) for the semester. The Incomplete can be removed by viewing a video selected by their advisor and submitting a 1,000 word report on the video to the advisor. If the paper is acceptable to the advisor, the advisor will report back to the course instructor that the "Incomplete" has been removed. The course instructor will inform the Registrar.
- If a student missed one required colloquium, then he or she will receive a grade of "I" (Incomplete) for the semester. The Incomplete can be removed by viewing a video selected by their advisor and submitting a 1,500 word report on the video to the advisor. The advisor will attempt to select a video that has a similar import of the missed colloquium. If the paper is acceptable to the advisor, the advisor will report back to the course instructor that the "Incomplete" has been removed. The course instructor will inform the Registrar.
- A student with multiple deficiencies at the end of the semester will receive a grade of NC (No Credit) for the semester.
- The required number of CS195 and CS295 courses can be adjusted at the discretion of the advisor in exceptional circumstances.
